Useful UK Winter Packing Guide for Colder Weather

Winer is a great time to visit the UK. The cities are beautiful as is the breathtaking countryside. And there really is so much to see.

The UK is quite often known for having bad weather, or at least a lot of rain. To make the most out of your visit here is my UK Winter Packing Guide so you can be fully prepared and enjoy the experience.

In the UK Winter technically starts in late December through to late March. However October and November can also be quite cold and frost is common in the mornings. These packing tips are specifically for the colder and wetter weather. Please take a look at my Essential Packing List for a full item list for all travel.

It is also worth noting what part of the UK you are visiting. The further north you are the colder it is likely to be with more of a chase of snow. The further South you go the milder it tends to be.

Hat, Gloves and Scarf

If you are going to be spending time outside when visiting the UK then you really will need a decent hat, gloves and a scarf. Mittens can be a good choice if you will be handling equipment which gloves are too thick for and a decent quality hat will help to not only keep you warm but protect your ears.

Thick Socks and Spares

I find there are fewer things worse than having cold or damp feet so be sure you pack plenty of pairs of thick socks to keep your feet warm and take spares with you on day trips just in case you need them.

Layers

Here in the UK we can have quite varied weather, so regardless of when you visit you should always be prepared with layers. This way if you get warmer you can take off a layer or two and put them back on when it gets cooler. Please don’t get caught out with just a large jumper that gets too hot when wearing it but too cold if you remove it.

Thick Knitwear

A thick warm jumper, cardigan or fleece to wrap yourself up in will keep you nice and toasty. An essential item that shouldn’t be missed from a UK Winter Packing Guide.

Denim Jeans

If you are visiting UK cities then demin jeans are a must have for style and comfort. However please note I wouldn’t suggest these if you are out hiking.

Waterproof Coat

Just like the shoes I’d recommend a waterproof coat any time of the year. Get one that also has a hood so that you can keep dry whatever the weather decides to do.

Good Waterproof Boots

I’d actually suggest having a good pair of waterproof boots or shoes with you in the UK regardless of the time of year. Especially important if you are doing outdoor activities. Make sure you wear your boots in so that they are comfortable for your trip. Take plenty of plasters if they are new just in case you get the odd blister.

Plastic Bags

Taking smaller plastic bags within a larger backpack will come in handy if you need to make a change of outfit because something has gotten damp. This way you’ll keep the soggy clothes separate from anything else you might be carrying with you.

Long Sleeved Tops

Great to help with the layering suggestion. Longer sleeved tops will increase your warmth and also look wonderfully stylish when you’re relaxing indoors.

Sunglasses

Bringing a pair of sunglasses may seem a little odd but actually although we get a lot of rain we also get a decent amount of bright sunshine. It may not be beach weather but the sunglasses will help protect your eyes and will be very useful if you are driving.

Don’t forget your sunglasses, even in Winter

Warm PJ’s

Most places have good heating however if you are staying in cute little holiday homes or bed and breakfasts in out in the countryside it can get very cold. Having warm sleepwear can make you stay that little bit better.

Slippers

A must have when you are walking around your hotel or holiday apartment to keep your feet warm. This added bit of cosyness will go a long way after a hard day of exploring.

I hope you have found this UK Winter Packing Guide useful and if you are planning a trip to the UK soon I hope you really enjoy it!
